Once a bottle of wine has been opened, the contents do not remain drinkable for long, even if the cork is put back in. This is especially true of red wine. The vacuum sealer allows the creation of a vacuum inside the bottle with a few strokes of the pump, thus delaying unwanted oxidation of the wine; it should remain drinkable for around a week.
