Descendents of the Evangelical Brethren from Moravia moved to Upper Lusatia at the beginning of the 18th Century and founded Herrnhut. This was the starting point of a worldwide mission. As part of their system of education, children from missionary families were put into boarding schools. To make the separation from their parents easier, particularly during Advent, a teacher began making stars out of card and paper about 150 years ago. Soon the pupils themselves were making the stars themselves. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century that mass production of these stars began and led to the Herrnhuter stars becoming widespread. The custom of building the stars in the family and hanging them up on the first Sunday of Advent is common throughout the world today. The stars are still hand made in Herrnhut. This is an original, only for use in enclosed rooms. Diameter approx. 60 cm
