The manufacture of porcelain was very much a Chinese domain for more than 1,000 years. It was not until 1708 that manufacturers in Meissen, Germany, discovered how to produce it. This process was then enhanced in England by adding 52% bone ash to the standard formula in addition to the normal ingredients of feldspar, quarry sand and china clay. The result was a particularly hard, white and translucent porcelain. As a result of its high degree in stability, very fine bone china can be produced with exceedingly elegant effects.
